Providing Water to Residents
Water utilities are administered through the Highway 28/63 Water Commission to the hamlets of Ashmont, Mallaig, and Lottie Lake and through the Elk Point/St. Paul Regional Water Commission to County residents located along the commission line. Truckfill services are also available to residents with cistern systems.
Septic Awareness Week, September 16-20
Western Canada Onsite Wastewater Management Association (WCOWMA) is offering free, virtual Septic Sense Presentations to assist homeowners in understanding the need to properly maintain and care for their septic systems. Alberta-specific sessions are being held on Monday, September 16, and Wednesday, September 18, at 7 p.m.
Water & Metering
The meter measures water flow into the home and determines water and wastewater (sewer) charges. A wire connects the meter to an automatic reading box (ARB) outside the house, which the County uses to read the meter without entering the home.
The household meter has a mechanical, digital (odometer-like) counter with a red indicator, about 2 inches long. The counter reads in cubic meters – one cubic meter is about 220 imperial gallons – and has black odometer numbers on the white background.
If you suspect a leak, you can use your odometer to confirm. Perform a test by ensuring anything connected to the water mains is turned off (toilets, sinks, sprinklers, hoses, humidifiers, ice machines, drinking water filters, reverse osmosis devices, etc.) and watch the odometer to see if usage is still going up. If it is, please call the County office to request an appointment to have your meter checked.
Water Utility Rates
Property Sales & Purchases
Should you sell a property with monthly Water Utility charges, it is your responsibility to notify the County of the change to avoid additional charges.
Similarly, if you purchase a property, check to see if any County Water Utilities are currently being charged on that property. The Utilities Department can advise you on how to complete an Application for a Water Utilities Account to transfer an existing set-up to you or if your property is eligible for water hookup to create a new account.
