Elections: Municipal and Senate/Referendum Votes

The next Municipal General Election is scheduled to take place on Monday, October 18, 2021.

Albertans will also have an opportunity to have their say on equalization, daylight saving time, and elect nominees to the Senate
when they vote in the fall municipal elections.  Alberta Government information 

The Local Authorities Election Act (LAEA) governs the nomination, voting, and election process.
Some provisions of the Act have changed since the 2017 election (see links below).


Nominations for the office of Reeve and County Councillor in each of the 6 Divisions will be accepted
between January 1, 2021 and noon on Monday, September 20, 2021 (Nomination Day).

Municipal General Election Key Dates

January 1, 2021 -  Nomination Period Opens

May 1, 2021 - Third Party Advertising Permitted

September 20, 2021 - Nomination Period Ends at 12 noon

Advance Voting - Advance voting is held to allow electors who are unable to vote on Election Day to cast their vote early.
*  October 7, 8, & 9 at the St. Paul Legion Hall for all Divisions from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
*  October 9 at the Elk Point Seniors Centre for Divisions 1, 2, and 3 from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

October 18, 2021  Municipal Election

Unofficial results will be forwarded to the County Office on election night.  The results will be posted live on the County’s website and final results will be posted on the County's Facebook page.

Results do not become official until 12 noon on the 4" day after election day.

Special Ballots

An Elector who is unable to vote at an Advance Vote or at a Voting Station on Election Day may apply to vote by special ballot under the following circumstances:
a) physical incapacity;
b) absence from the local jurisdiction, or
c)  being a Returning Officer, Deputy Returning Officer, Candidate, Official Agent or scrutineer who may be located on Election Day at a voting station other than that for the Elector’s place of residence.

An application for a special ballot may be made by any one of the following methods between August 1 and 9:00 a.m. on Election Day:
a)  in writing or in person to the Returning Officer, or designate, at the location(s) specified by the Returning Officer;
b)  by telephone at the phone number specified by the Returning Officer;
by telecopier at the fax number specified by the Returning Officer;
d)  by e-mail at the e-mail address specified by the Returning Officer.

The special ballot must be marked and submitted to the Returning Officer prior to noon on Election Day to be included in the ballot count.



The Order in Council and Writ of Election for the 2021 Alberta Senate Election was issued on June 23, 2021, to hold an election to select 3 Senate nominees who may be summoned to the Senate of Canada, to fill a vacancy or vacancies relating to Alberta. The Senate Election will take place on October 18, 2021, in conjunction with the 2021 Alberta Municipal Elections.

2021 Municipal Election Results

Unofficial results will be posted as they are received from the voting stations on Election Day.
Official results will be declared at noon on the 4th day after Election Day (October 22, 2021).
