Blue-green Algae Webinar

August 26 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Each summer, blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) blooms impact lakes across Alberta, raising important questions about water quality, recreation, ecosystem health, and public safety. This informative webinar brings together leading researchers and local stewardship experts to provide a science-based, balanced perspective on this important freshwater issue.

Speakers include:

  • Dr. Rolf Vinebrooke, University of Alberta – An overview of the ecological role of algae, freshwater biodiversity, and the importance of healthy aquatic ecosystems.
  • Dr. Helen Baulch, University of Saskatchewan – An exploration of harmful algal blooms, the environmental factors that contribute to them, and key public health considerations.
  • Jodie Genest, Community Outreach Coordinator, Lakeland Industry and Community Association (LICA) – An introduction to LICA’s Keep Our Lakes Blue campaign and practical stewardship actions residents can take to help protect Alberta’s lakes.

Together, these presentations will provide complementary perspectives on one of Alberta’s most significant freshwater challenges, followed by a live question-and-answer session with the presenters.
